As the summer season kicks into high gear, the California Dental Association urges adults and children alike to choose healthy summer snack and drink options for good oral health.
In the heat of summer, children often turn to beverages and processed foods that contain a substantial amount of sugar. But consuming these high amounts of sugar on a regular basis can lead to the formation of cavities, said CDA President Dr. John Blake, DDS.
“Making wise food choices is a crucial part of daily dental care,” Dr. Blake said. “To protect their child’s teeth – and their own – parents should watch their intake of lemonade, juice and soda and swap acidic, sugary foods for nutritious snacks.”
Many delicious tooth-friendly snack options can be incorporated into summer diets:
- Crisp fruits and vegetables: Snacking on crisp fruits and vegetables like apples, carrots and celery stimulates saliva production, which helps to neutralize harmful acids and wash away food particles.
- Yogurt and cheese: Rich in calcium and probiotics, yogurt and cheese not only provide essential nutrients but also promote a healthy balance of bacteria in the mouth. This can help prevent the growth of harmful bacteria that lead to cavities.
- Nuts and seeds: Chewing on nuts and seeds, such as almonds and sunflower seeds, stimulates saliva flow and provides a natural scrubbing action, aiding in removing plaque from teeth.
- Water: Staying hydrated with water is vital for overall health and plays a significant role in maintaining good oral hygiene. Water helps wash away food debris and neutralize acids, reducing the risk of tooth decay.
In addition to practicing healthy food and drink habits, Blake also recommends brushing for two minutes, twice a day with a fluoride toothpaste, flossing daily and visiting a dentist for regular checkups.
