Requirements and Responsibilities for Prescribing Schedule II Opioids for CA Dentists – Opioids CE for Doctors who Never Prescribe Opioids

Effective January 1, 2023, ALL DENTISTS must complete 2 CE units of a Board-approved course on the responsibilities and requirements of prescribing opioids. This course is approved by the Dental Board of CA and mandated for ALL dentists and oral surgeons renewing their license.

Learning Objectives:

• Discuss non-opioid strategies for Pain Management in Dentistry
• Review the scientific data that demonstrates the superiority of NSAIDS +/- acetaminophen for dental pain
• Review non-opioid alternatives such as ketorolac, Exparel, and steroids
• Discuss the Regulatory Requirements for Prescribers and Dispensers
• Review basic principles regarding opioid prescribing, including screening and the use of CURES
• Discuss Dental Office Procedures for Managing Vulnerable or Substance Use Disorder Patients

Target Audience: All CA dentists who need to renew their license as this is a mandatory course.

Dr. Steve Yun, M.D., Diplomate, American Board of Anesthesiology
Dr. Yun is a board-certified anesthesiologist who specializes in dental office anesthesia. He obtained his M.D. with honors from the University of Southern California and completed his post-graduate training at the UCLA Center for Health Sciences. He is a Clinical Professor at the Western University of Health Sciences, and an Expert Consultant and Examiner for the Dental Board of California. He is also a Safety Inspector for the American Association for the Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgical Facilities (AAAASF).

He is a Medical Advisory Board member for Healthfirst, the leading provider of emergency medical supplies for dental offices in North America, and a medical consultant for DOCS Education. He is also Co-Course Director for Boston Children’s Hospital’s annual conference, Pediatric Sedation Outside the O.R.

He has extensive clinical research experience and as a popular speaker, gives numerous lectures across the country and internationally on patient safety issues.
