Mandibular Advancement Devices in the Management of Sleep Disordered Breathing (Session 2 of 2)

This course will provide an overview of the types of mandibular advancement devices used in the management of sleep disordered breathing, the pathophysiology of the airway and practice parameters for the dentist in the screening, treatment and follow-up of the mandibular advancement device.

This course will take place over 2-days. Both days will have a didactic and lab sessions. Impressions and bite registrations (both with impression materials and digital scanning will be demonstrated) with the use of a George Gauge will be taken and the participant will use this information to take impressions at their practice and have a mandibular advancement device fabricated and brought to the second day of the course for delivery. Different appliances will be assigned to participants so a variety of appliances can be observed during the day of delivery.
Learning Topics:

  • Review the pathophysiology of sleep disordered breathing and the effects of MAD’s on the airway
  • Review practice parameters for the management of SDB with MAD’s
  • Review indications and contraindications for the use of MAD’s
  • Review of a sleep study report
  • Understand PAP therapy and its indications (CPAP, BiPAP, APAP)
  • Hands on sessions in taking impressions and bite registrations for the fabrication of mandibular advancement devices (Session 1)
  • Deliver a mandibular advancement device (Session 2)
