Scientific Sessions Board of Managers
Mission Statement
The mission of the Scientific Sessions Board of Managers is to produce two preeminent Scientific Sessions per year for the dental community, and to assist the association in achieving its goals by working with other councils and committees as well as provide expertise, in the development of CDA’s educational programs.
Objectives
1. To provide a wide range of continuing education programs to the entire dental profession that contributes to professional growth, as well as satisfies relicensure requirements.
2. To help dentists fulfill their educational and professional needs through interaction with peers as well as with other related health care and business disciplines during Scientific Sessions.
3. To unite the dental team through education, motivation and fellowship.
4. To be the primary source for credible, researched and responsible dental education for the dental team: dentists, allied dental health professionals, support staff, lab technicians, and the dental industry.
5. To offer the finest collection of technical exhibits the dental industry has to offer.
6. To work collaboratively with other CDA councils and committees as well as outside organizations to ensure that CDA programs reflect current regulations and needs facing the profession.
7. To evaluate the marketplace of meetings, speakers and topics to assist in planning for future meetings.
8. To evaluate the effectiveness of all programs to confirm they meet these objectives and mission.
9. To provide revenue to increase the benefits of CDA membership.
Primary Duties
1. Take an active part in the production of CDA’s two Scientific Sessions.
2. Provide expertise in the development of CDA’s educational programs.
3. Have an understanding of CDA’s Scientific Sessions and Education Department and the role it has in CDA’s Strategic Plan.
Time Requirements
A minimum of 16 days annually:
Board meetings - 4 one-day meetings
Spring Session - 4 ½ days
Fall Session - 3 ½ days
Scouting Trip - 4 days
Qualifications, Special Skills and Knowledge
1. Candidate must be well informed concerning new trends, innovative ideas and topics of current interest to the dental profession and share this knowledge in the production of the Scientific Sessions.
2. Should be willing to travel to other major dental meetings to scout potential speakers, and have the ability to objectively evaluate different programs and speakers for appropriateness to present at CDA Sessions.
3. Communication skills a must, due to the need to interact with large numbers of professionals from differing disciplines in the scheduling of sessions and to diplomatically discuss monetary arrangements.
4. Must be able to employ diplomacy and tact in dealing with potential difficulties which arise in the normal production of a session.
5. Prior meeting experience, especially on the component level, is a definite asset. Must be familiar with the potential draw of different speakers in order to properly consider room size and other considerations when scheduling a program.
6. Must be willing to sacrifice personal time, when necessary, for attendance at Scientific Sessions and for assistance with the physical setup of the program.
7. A flair for new and innovative ideas and a “feel” for topics of interest to the profession are a definite asset, as well as the ability to anticipate membership interest in the planning of special tours and social events.
8. Must be able to work closely with CDA staff in finalizing a program and bringing all details to a satisfactory conclusion.
Terms of Office
The term of members of the board of managers shall be three years and the consecutive tenure of a member of the board of managers shall be limited to two full terms of three years each. The terms shall be staggered.
